Caste enumeration in Census 2027
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs decided on 30 April 2025 to include caste enumeration in the census.
- Caste is recorded in Phase II, Population Enumeration (February 2027; September 2026 in the snow-bound areas).
- It is question 10 of the 40-question household schedule.
- Censuses up to 2011 recorded only Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Census 2027 is the first comprehensive caste count since independence.
- No caste data has been released. This site will publish only official tables, at state level, without commentary.
