CO₂ emissions · 2024

Historical CO₂ emissions by country

Since 1750 the world has emitted 1849.12 billion tonnes of CO₂ from fossil fuels and industry. What warms the planet is this running total, not one year’s emissions, so countries that industrialised early carry the largest share.

Fossil fuels and industry. 2024 is the latest year the Global Carbon Budget reports by country.

Gt = billion tonnes, Mt = million tonnes, t = tonnes of CO₂. Emissions are counted where fuel is burned (territorial), not where goods are consumed. International aviation and shipping (3.1% of the world total) belong to no country.

Questions

Which country has emitted the most CO₂ in history?

The United States: 434.87 billion tonnes since 1750, 23.5% of the world total, then China (285.09 billion tonnes, 15.4%) and Russia.

Why do historical emissions matter?

CO₂ stays in the atmosphere for centuries, so warming tracks the cumulative total. That is why climate negotiations weigh historical responsibility as well as current emissions.

What share of historical emissions is India’s?

3.6% (66.07 billion tonnes since 1750), though India has 18% of the world’s people.
