How we use the data

Every world figure comes from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024, the reference the UN, the World Bank and most national comparisons use. Figures up to 2023 are the UN’s estimates; later years are its medium-variant projection, the most likely path for fertility, mortality and migration. We label every number accordingly.

Populations are for 1 July of each year. The live counters interpolate between consecutive 1 July figures, second by second, and spread the year’s births and deaths evenly; that shows the scale and direction of change, not a real-time count, which nobody has.

National statistics offices publish their own counts and estimates, which can differ from the UN’s, especially between censuses. Country names follow common English usage; the UN reports some areas (such as Hong Kong or Puerto Rico) separately.
