Frequently asked questions

What is the population of India in 2026?

1,42,34,35,000 (142.34 crore) on 1 March 2026, according to the official projection of the RGI Technical Group. The UN-based World Bank figure for mid-2025 is 1,46,38,65,525; the difference comes from method, not from new data.

What was the population of India in Census 2011?

The final Census 2011 count is 1,21,08,54,977 (62,32,70,258 males, 58,75,84,719 females). Two other totals circulate: 1,21,01,93,422 from the provisional figures of March 2011, and 1,21,05,69,573 which leaves out three sub-divisions of Senapati district in Manipur where the count was estimated.

Which is the most populous state of India?

Uttar Pradesh, with 24.29 crore people projected for 2026, followed by Bihar and Maharashtra.

When will Census 2027 results be released?

Population enumeration happens in February 2027 with a reference date of 1 March 2027. No release date has been announced. In 2011, provisional totals came out on 31 March 2011, about a month after counting ended.

Is India the most populous country?

UN estimates have put India ahead of China since 2023. India's own official projection (142.34 crore in 2026) is lower than the UN figure because the two use different assumptions.
