Census 2027 questions

Phase I: houselisting and housing

Questions notified in January 2026 cover the building and the house (material of floor, wall and roof, use, condition), the household (number of members, head of household), amenities (drinking water, lighting, toilet, drainage, kitchen and cooking fuel) and assets.

Phase II: population enumeration (40 questions)

The household schedule notified on 14 August 2026 asks every person about:

• Name, relationship to head, sex, date of birth and age, marital status, age at marriage
• Religion; Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe; caste (question 10)
• Disability; mother tongue and other languages
• Literacy and digital literacy; school or college attendance; highest education
• Work in the last year: economic activity, occupation, industry, class of worker; seeking work; travel to work
• Birthplace, last residence, reason for migration, duration of stay
• For women: children ever born, surviving, born in the last year
• Mobile number, and (if available) Aadhaar, voter ID, passport and driving licence; number of bank accounts
